Argonne National Laboratory is one of the U.S. Department of Energy's largest research centers. It is also the nations largest national laboratory, chartered in 1946. Argonne's annual operating buget is about $465 million that supports more than 200 research projects ranging from studies of the atomic nucleus to global climate change.

Argonne occupies two sites. The Illinois site is surrounded by a forrest preserve about 25 miles southeast of Chicago's Loop. More than 3,000 Argonne employees work on the sites 1,700 wooded acres.
